Burning tips & safety guidelines

Burning tips

We love candles and want to make sure you can enjoy your candles optimally, safely and for a long time. In our candle studio, we constantly test our products for things like burn time and wick size. During these tests, we've made some interesting discoveries that we're happy to share with you. Here are 6 helpful tips for burning candles so you can get the most out of them.

1. Keep your wick short
This tip is perhaps the most important. Keeping your wick short can help your candle burn up to 5 hours longer. A shorter wick creates a smaller flame, so the soy wax melts more slowly and evenly. A larger flame makes the candle hotter, so the wax evaporates faster. Therefore, cut or break the wick to no more than 1 cm before each burn.

2. Melt the candle layer by layer
Prevent your candle from “tunneling” - the phenomenon where wax sticks to the sides of the glass. This rarely happens with our soy candles because the wax liquefies quickly and the wick is always the right size. Still, we recommend melting only the top layer of the candle the first time.
With candles in a V-shaped glass, they may appear to tunnel, but as the flame gets closer to the center, the wax melts completely.

3. Don't leave your candle burning too long
To make your candle last longer, it is wise not to let it burn for hours at a time. It is best to burn your candle for one to two hours. After extinguishing it, the smell of the liquid wax will linger for a while.
If your candle burns too long, it creates a larger flame and the wick may “mushroom,” causing faster wax burning and possibly smoke and black deposits on the glass. So keep the wick short regularly and burn your candle for no more than 3 hours per session.

4. Keep the wick in the middle
A wick can lean to one side while burning, leading to uneven burning. Make sure the wick stays in the middle by gently bending it back with a match or stick.
At the end of the candle, when the bottom layer of wax liquefies, the wick may detach from the bottom. Do not move your candle while the wax is still liquid and do not blow out the candle (see tip 6) to prevent the wick from floating to the edge.

5. Leave a small layer of wax
Make sure you always leave a thin layer of wax in the glass when you extinguish the candle for the last time. This prevents excessive heat at the bottom of the glass.
Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface to prevent fire and damage and to avoid leaving stains or circles.

6. Don't blow out your candle
Instead of blowing out your candle, extinguish the flame by carefully dipping the wick into the liquid wax with a match or stick. The flame goes out immediately and you avoid smoke and a crooked wick. Be sure to straighten the wick afterwards so it is ready for the next burn.

With these tips you can enjoy your candles to the fullest and make them last longer in a safe way. Have fun burning!

Safety guidelines

Conditions Before Burning the Candle
1. Before use, read the instructions.
2. Remove any packaging/sticker before lighting the candles.
3. Keep the wick clean, short, and straight (not longer than 1cm). Trim the wick if necessary before lighting the candle. If the candle smokes, soots, or produces a large flame, trim a small portion of the wick.

WARNING: This product is no consumption.

Positioning
1. Always place the candle in a non-flammable, suitable, and stable candle holder.
2. The candle should be burned in an upright and stable position. A tilted candle may smoke and drip.
3. Place burning candles at least 10 cm apart. If candles are too close, they may heat each other, causing dripping.
4. Do not place burning candles in an air draft, such as near a window, door, or walkway, as a draft can cause the candle to smoke and drip.
5. Never place a candle near flammable sources.
6. Avoid placing a candle near other heat and flammable sources, such as a TV, radiator/heater, or fireplace, as external heat sources can cause the candle to smoke and drip.
7. Never place a candle in direct sunlight and high temperatures. Excessive heat can cause the candle to melt, discolor, and drip.
8. A candle needs sufficient oxygen to burn well and must be able to release its heat. Choose the right-sized candle holder for burning.
9. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.

Burning
1. Do not burn a candle for more than 3-4 hours continuously. Allow a burning candle to be extinguished for at least 1 hour every 3-4 hours.
2. Candles with a diameter of 10 cm or more must burn the first time until 1 cm from the outer edge of the candle has melted. This prevents the formation of 'tunnels,' ensuring the candle burns properly.
3. Trim the outer edge of the candle to a height of 1 cm after burning. This prevents the edge of the wax from becoming too high and dripping.
4. Never move a burning candle. Extinguish the candle first and wait until it has completely cooled. This prevents the risk of fire, paraffin spills, and imbalance of paraffin and wick.
5. Ventilate the room after burning candles.
6. Always exercise caution when burning candles. The product becomes hot. Don't touch!
7. Never leave candles unattended.

Preventing Pollution
1. Never place a burnt match or other flammable materials in the candle wax. This can cause a second flame, leading to incorrect burning, dripping, smoking, or even an explosion.
Extinguishing
1. Extinguish the candle at least 1 cm from the edge of the candle holder using a candle snuffer.
2. Never extinguish a candle with water. Water can cause hot wax to splatter.
3. Avoid inhaling the smoke directly after extinguishing the candle.

Symbols
Always observe the symbols which are partly indicated on the bottom of the candles or on packaging. This ensures that the candles are burned safely and responsibly.
